Cancellations and Delays Policy

  • In the event that weather or other emergency conditions warrant the all-day closing, delayed opening or early closure of the University, announcements will be made via the University Emergency Messaging System; no school closing notifications will be made before 5:30 a.m. School closing information will also be posted on the website.
  • In the event that weather or other emergency conditions warrant the all-day closing,  delayed opening or early closure of the University, announcements will be made on the following radio and television stations, and websites:
  • Radio stations: WBZ 1030 AM
  • Television Channels: WBZ-TV Channel 4, WCVB-TV Channel 5, WHDH-TV Channel 7, FOX25-TV Channel 25
  • Other: Rhode Island Broadcasters Association (RIBA) participating members http://www.ribroadcasters.com/images/user/file/RIBA%20Stations.pdf
  • Websites: www.suffolk.edu
  • Please call 866-312-2632 for updated messages. Do not call the University Police Department, switchboard, administrative offices, radio, or television stations to verify University closing.
  • On-line classes are typically not cancelled due to weather.

The decision on early dismissal of employees due to weather conditions will be announced by the provost.  This information will be delivered through a message to office telephone extensions, text or e-mail messages, and Web announcements.

Please note:  

  • When classes are delayed or canceled, the cancellation will apply to the entire University, including all three schools – Arts & Sciences, including NESAD, Business, and Law – as well as libraries and all University activities (Student Affairs, performances, etc.)  For athletic events, please consult the Athletics Department Web site at www.suffolk.edu/athletics or contact the Athletics Department at 617-573-8379
  • In the event of a delayed opening, classes will begin and administrative offices will open at 10 a.m.  Classes scheduled before 10 a.m. will be canceled for the day.
  • For an afternoon closing, the normal ending time will be 3 p.m. (no classes will begin after 3 p.m.), unless weather conditions require earlier closing. 
  • Weekend and holiday closings or delays, including the libraries, will be handled in the same manner as weekdays.  School delays or cancellations also will be announced on the radio and television stations listed above.
