This document provides a general guidance of evacuation procedures for students with disabilities in case of fire or other building emergencies. Suffolk University students who may require special assistance in the event of emergency evacuation should contact the Office of Disability Services at 617-994-6820 or disabilityservices@suffolk.edu to create an evacuation plan immediately upon arrival at Suffolk.

The evacuation of any Suffolk University building during a fire alarm is required, regardless of cause. In accordance with regulatory requirements and Suffolk University policies and procedures, everyone must evacuate a building in which a fire alarm is sounding or blinking. Fire alarms include, but are not limited to accidental alarm, false alarm or conditions caused by fire and/or smoke.

Evacuating Students with Disabilities:

Students with disabilities should meet with the Office of Disability Services to create an evacuation plan. In the event of emergency students with disabilities should follow these steps:

  1. Contact the Suffolk University Police Department (SUPD) immediately. You can reach them by dialing 617-573-8111 on your cell phone.
  2. Go to the safest place of refuge. Often times this is a stairway.
  3. Wait for the SUPD or the fire department to come to you. Keep your cell phone with you at all times.

As part of your evacuation plan, the Office of Disability Services will notify your resident Assistant Director, Resident Advisor (RA) and the SUPD of the fact that you have an evacuation plan.

  • If you are in a residence hall, your RA will find you (if safe to do so), advise you to get to a safe location and will notify the SUPD of your whereabouts once they are out of the building. You should still contact the SUPD immediately by dialing 8111.
  • If you are in the classroom, the SUPD will have access to your course schedule and will either come assist you or notify the fire department. You should still contact the SUPD immediately by dialing 8111.
