Campus Wireless

802.11n is a new standard of 11ac now called Wi-Fi , or wireless, 5 is the latest deployed standard for wireless local area networking (WLAN). The main benefit of 802.11n of Wi-Fi 5 when compared to 802.11g1n, are 50% 3X faster transmission speeds, capacity and increased signal strength. 802.11n    Wi-Fi 5 also supports systems using 802.11a11n, a, b, or g, at their rated speeds. In the summer of 2011, Information Technology Services began an Wi-Fi 5 uses the 5GHz band while 802.11n uses 5GHz and 2.4GHz.  A new standard 802.11ax or Wi-Fi 6 is being finalized by 2020.

Information Technology Services has completed campus wide upgrade to 802.11n11ac or Wi-Fi 5, and it is now deployed in all Suffolk University buildings supporting all the standards below.

WPA2 Wireless

SU WPA2 is Suffolk University's secured wireless service. It is available in all publicly accessible areas in all the Suffolk's campus buildings. This includes all the residence halls. Students can access SU_Student_WPA2 service with their Suffolk email or single sign-on credentials; faculty and staff can access SU_Staff_WPA2 with their Suffolk University computer workstation accountsemail or single sign-on credentials. SU WPA2 secured wireless service will allow you users to access standard websites, but it also allows you as well as to connect to shared departmental network drives, shared folders, certain network applications, edit websites you have access to, perform file transfers, and much more. 

What to Expect

This service normally will be available 24 by 7 except for standard change windows, as described in SU’s standard policies, procedures, and schedules for making changes.

Requirements

Access to the University’s wireless network generally requires a device with an 802.11 Ethernet adapter, supporting either A, G, B, N or AC and wireless services available in that location.
