EVACUATION PROCEDURES & ROUTES

There are three four stairwells that can be used for building evacuation. Stair 1 serves the gymnasium to the 6th floor3 serves floors 0 – 6, is located on the Temple Street of the building, and occupants exit the stairs on the first floor onto Temple Street. Stair 4 serves floors 1 – roof, is located on the east Ridgeway Lane side of the building next to the elevators, and occupants exit the stairs on the 1st floor into the lobby and out the main entrance onto Cambridge first floor into a hallway and out an exit door onto Derne Street. Stair 2 serves the gymnasium to the 1st floor5 serves floors 1 – roof, is located on the east Temple Street side of the building, and occupants exit the stairs on the 1st floor onto Ridgeway Lanefirst floor onto Temple Street. Stair 3 6 serves floors 2 1 4 as well as the 6th floor, and is located on the southwest corner Ridgeway Lane side of the building, and occupants exit the stairs on the 1st floor onto Hancock Street. second floor onto Ridgeway Lane.

There are two exits available to the bookstore. The first exit is four stairwells available to the C. Walsh Theatre for building evacuation. Stairs 7 & 8 serve floors 1 & 2, are located on the Ridgeway Lane side of the building, and occupants exit the stairs on the second floor onto Ridgeway Lane. Stairs 9 & 10 serve floors 0 – 2, are located on the Temple Street side of the building, and occupants exit the stairs on the first floor into the lobby and out the main entrance onto Cambridge Temple Street. The second exit is in the back of the store on the east side and leads to a corridor which opens into Stair 2

On floors 1 through 6 there is a pass-through on the north side of the building into the Donahue Building.

The primary assembly area for 148 Cambridge 20 Derne Street is the intersection of Cambridge Temple Street and Temple Cambridge Street.  

If there is a need to assemble further away from the building, the secondary assembly area is in front of the Donahue Building on Temple StreetRoemer Plaza, which is located on the south side of 20 Somerset Street, outside the main entrance.

The designated areas of refuge for 148 Cambridge 20 Derne Street are the landings in the stairwells. These areas are sometimes known as “emergency waiting areas” or “locations for rescue assistance.” The enclosed stairwells are constructed of fire resistive materials that protect individuals from the effects of a fire during evacuation.
